Hello and a good afternoon and thank you for visiting this homepage for the Kitchuhmaykoosib Inninuwug Band Membership.
This will be used to update on how and what to do to order the birth certificates, social insurance number cards and what to do to register your new born baby.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
February 23, 2010....This is regarding the issuance of the Indian Status Cards....As of February 1, 2010, Everybody is/was required to provide two pieces of I.D cards before your Indian status card will be issued. The following will be accepted as I.D, Birth Certificate, Canadian Passport, Driver's License, Employee ID Card, Firearms License, Guarantor Form, Old Indian Status ID Card, Provincial Health Card, Provincial ID Card, Student ID Card. But if you do not have one of the following ID cards, I suppose the Indian Registration Administrator will have to guarantee your identity.
February 11, 2010..Good Morning!!! The people from Service Canada were here last week to help people who haven't registered their children after they were born after one year. There was quite a turn out from the parent(s), thank you for coming in. Also for the people who needed help in applying for the Certified Copies of the Statement of Live Birth and birth certificates.
I hope this day finds you well...
January 25, 2010...For Your Information........ AS OF FEBRUARY 1, 2010..EVERYBODY WILL BE REQUIRED TO HAVE TWO PIECES OF I.D TO APPLY FOR AN INDIAN STATUS CARD.THERE WILL BE NO EXCEPTIONS TO THIS RULE.
1) OLD EXPIRED STATUS CARD
2) BIRTH CERTIFICATE
3) DRIVER'S LICENSE
4) HEALTH CARD ( MAYBE WITH OR WITHOUT A PICTURE )
THESE ARE THE ONLY I.D CARDS I CAN THINK OF AT THIS TIME THAT YOU CAN USE TO APPLY FOR THE INDIAN STATUS CARD.
January 21, 2010...Good afternoon from the BTL membership office site..Reports - Reports are sent out once a month only to Indian and Northern Affairs in Toronto.I cannot send out one piece of information like a birth registration just so your child can be registered because of some medical appointment. It is the parent's responsibility to register their child's birth right after the child is born.Waiting one year or more will cause you great hardship as with medical appointments.So you need to contact the nearest band membership office in your geographical area to pick up the Statement of Livebirth form so you and your partner will fill out and sign and mail out or use the ServiceOntario web site to apply. For this, you will need a credit card but you should receive the certified copy within two or three weeks after applying. ServiceOntario website will ask you if you want to apply for the birth certifcate and social insurance number while applying for the certified copy of the Statement of Live Birth, please check that off so you will only have to do that once.
Now you all have a good day!!!!1
January 13, 2010....good morning to all...This is for all parents who haven't worked on registering their childrens birth with the Office of the Registrar General in Thunder Bay, please do so right away. The longer you wait, the more problems you will encounter along the way especially with medical appointments. The longest you can wait to register the birth is before the child reaches their first birthday.
After that, you will have use a different form ( Delayed Registeration of Birth with a $50 or $60 fee) in registering the child's birth. That alone will take time and even after the child's birth is registered with ORG, they will not inform you that the child's birth is registered. You the parent will have to keep calling and calling to find out if the birth was registered.
SO, DO NOT WAIT FOR SOMONE ELSE TO DO WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO TO REGISTER THE CHILD'S BIRTH!!!!
December 10, 2009..This is to give the Kitchenumaykoosib Aaki anishiniwug band membership a heads up on what is going to happen next year on February 2, 3 and 4, 2010..Service Canada will be coming to nuhmaykoosibeek on those dates to help the people do a Delayed Registration of Births. As per this morning's get together, we heard that the fee will be waived meaning, you, the parent(s) will not to pay for the birth registration. The big but is, the fee waived will only be for the people who are on either Ontario Works (welfare) and the Ontario Disability Support Program. That doesn't mean you cannot get help in filling out the D.R.B form. More information will be posted on the community t.v channel and bulletin boards as they are received.
This is what I received to a question I had asked INAC regarding persons who are asking for their own registry numbers;
From: John Ross
A/Supervisor
Indian Registration
Ontario Regional Office
To: Audrey Lariviere
Monitoring and Compliance Officer
INAC
Office of the Indian Registrar
To: Julie Nahwegabow
"Since June 2nd 2003 new registration numbers are unique to each individual inscribed in the Indian Registry System. Nevertheless, several individuals inscribed prior to this date may still have numbers ending in 02,03 etc.....which automatically became their unique number.
In the past, these numbers were important because it was associated to the individuals family lineage but this association by number no longer exists in the IRS. Furthermore, since modifications of the Indian Act in 1985, inscriptions are no longer based on family lineage.
[ Therefore, woman who married native males no longer obtained Indian Status by becoming a member of their husbands band. Accordingly the children of this union would be affiliated, when applying for Indian status, to either parents band].
For this reason, we strongly encourage individuals to retain their original registration number which is now unique to each individual; also we hope to minimize the issuance of new numbers for security reasons.
Whenever possible we explain to clients that each number is unique to each individual and should be retained except for exceptional circumstances on a case by case basis.
Required documentation: a written request duly signed and dated, in which the client clearly indicates reason for request of a new registration number. ( i.e, religious reasons; number contains 666)
Thank You"
Reports are mailed monthly to the INAC Headquarters in Toronto to process the reports which are mailed out from the band office and it does take a few weeks before they send back the new information in regards to the individuals who either change their band membership, new births or changes to the persons information.
September 29, 2009..
INAC POLICY CHANGE REGARDING BIRTH REGISTRATIONS:
As of August 11, 2009, only the original Birth Registration docments issued by the Vital Statistics for all Ontario Births or from the province of the child's birth will only be accepted by INAC. They say that they have to feel the seal at the bottom of the form to verify authenticity. INAC will no longer accept the faxed or photocopied documents to register any births and will return all forms. For further clarification, please call the Band Membership office in your area.
September 22, 2009...
Good morning from KI....It has been awhile updating this homepage...nothing new has transpired regarding the new Indian status cards..I don't even know if and when Indian and Northern Affairs Canada will even come up North to install the equipment. But during the training we had in Thunder Bay, they had told us that they'd visit the communities if our offices could handle the equipment or if they were secure. They want everything double locked, just in case some big-time criminal(s) decided to break in and make of with the equipment.
But like before, you can still apply for the paper laminated status cards.
August 18, 2009...good morning to all....I still haven't received confirmation as to when we will receive the equipment for the new secure status cards. I assumed that we would have the equipment set up by or on September of this year but, this is a big but, I don't know. Everybody will be notified if and when then will happen. If that comes to pass, you will need your birth certificate plus one or more identification cards to apply for your new status card. So you have to apply for your birth certificate now!!!!!
As of today, you can still apply for the paper laminated Indian status cards at the band membership office, but you do have to bring your own picture since the membership office has no film for the camera. I don't think they make those kind of film anymore. So apply for your status card now, it'll be good for three or five years from the date is was issued or from your birth date. Three years for 0 to 18, 18 and over it's five years.
May 15, 2009...
Good morning, I guess...I still have the status cards if you'd like to renew your old card...if it was issued more than 5 years ago even if the expiry date was inputted as"N/A" (for persons 18 years and older)(17 and under is for 3 years), you still have to renew your card and bring your own picture, a picture that was taken about 6 months back...
I still have no concrete news as to when the new Secure status cards will start to be issued.
If you're thinking of going across to the United States, your current status card will still be accepted but you should apply for a passport so you'll have no problems entering the US.
COME ON PEOPLE.....IF you have not registered your child(ren)'s birth or you need assistance in registering your your child(ren)'s birth. Please call the KI band office and ask for the band membership clerk. If you would like to do the birth application in your own home, please call the band membership clerk and we will come to your home. All parents are encouraged to register their child(ren)'s birth as soon as possible. THE PARENT(S) WILL NOT HAVE TO PAY FOR THE BIRTH REGISTRATION. THE BAND WILL COVER ALL THE COSTS.
The toll free telephone number to the Office of the Registrar General's office in Thunder Bay is 1-800-461-2156 and Toronto telephone number's 416-325-8305. The toll free telephone number for the Delayed Registration of Birth is the same as the toll free number and the other telephone number is 416-965-1687.
Good evening from here.....here's an update for the new secure certificate of Indian status cards that will be used...anybody can still apply for the paper laminated status card until the equipment that will be used for the new secure status cards is installed at the membership office(s) which will probably be during September 2009. You must have internet connection in the first place or you won't receive the equipment.
For the first and everytime you apply for the secure status card, you must produce your birth certificate plus two other identification cards. Your current valid status card, probably health card (either the green and/or red/white card), drivers license. If you don't have a birth certificate, please order one as soon as possible. There is more information but I haven't learned all of it just yet.
